The Stony Brook women’s soccer team failed to get on the board for a second straight affair.
On Thursday, the Seawolves (2-2-1) faced off against the Yale Bulldogs (3-1) in New Haven, Conn. After suffering a 1-0 shutout, Stony Brook’s scoring drought is now at 217 minutes.
The Seawolves controlled the game early, as they created quality opportunities. In the 20th minute, midfielder Linn Beck broke free on a counterattack. In a one-on-one battle with Yale goalkeeper Kyla Holmes, the Bulldogs’ shot stopper got the best of Beck to keep things scoreless. In the 27th minute, forward Reilly Rich tried her luck from deep but narrowly missed the net to the right.
Conversely, Yale struggled to create offense in the first half, as it did not register a shot on target within the opening 45 minutes. However, the tide turned in the second period.
The Bulldogs relentlessly fired shots towards goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella, and, although most did not hit the target still, Yale’s time would soon come. In the 72nd minute, Yale midfielder Alanna Butcher took a corner kick that, after bypassing some traffic in the box, nestled in defender Marz Akins’ boot. Her first touch sent the ball into the top right corner to give her team a lead it would not relinquish.
Stony Brook’s best chance to equalize came in the 82nd minute. Off a set piece, defender Kerry Pearson found forward Luciana Setteducate in the box. As she was flanked by opposing defenders, Setteducate was forced to shoot a difficult angle, making Yale backup goalkeeper Anna Shamgochian’s job easy.
Head coach Tobias Bischof did not speak to the media after the game.
The Seawolves were outshot 13 (two shots on goal) to 11 (six shots on goal).
Pasquarella was left unchallenged for most of the match, as she made just one save compared to six between Holmes (four) — who was substituted in the 49th minute due to injury — and Shamgochian (two).
Stony Brook’s offense will look to recalibrate when it returns to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Monday to host the Le Moyne Dolphins. Le Moyne is 1-5 in 2024 and is coming off a 4-0 loss to Temple. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
