The Stony Brook men’s soccer team had its best attacking showing of 2024 in its first victory of the year.
On Tuesday night, the Seawolves (1-2-1) took on the George Washington Revolutionaries (1-3) at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Three unique goalscorers culminated in a 3-0 Stony Brook win.
The Seawolves got all the offense they would need in the 35th minute. On the left flank, midfielder Trevor Harrison found himself in acres of space and a clear runway to goal. Instead of waiting for Harrison to enter his box, George Washington goalkeeper Tom Macauley sprinted to meet the threat 20 yards from his net. After dribbling past Macauley, Harrison found the back of the net to put Stony Brook up 1-0.
“We won it and the ball came out nicely,” Harrison said in a postgame interview with The Statesman. “I saw me and the goalie one-on-one, just touched to the side and prayed it went in.”
After both sides went silent until after the intermission, the Seawolves doubled their lead early into the second half. In the 57th minute, forward Jonas Bičkus was upended by George Washington defender Mark Nakamura as he drove towards the goal. As the foul was committed in the box, Stony Brook was awarded a penalty, which Bičkus drilled in to double the team’s lead.
Just 54 seconds later, the Seawolves made it three. Midfielder Lorenzo Selini found Bičkus, who quickly advanced the ball to forward Finlay Oliver. At the edge of the box, Oliver took three touches to his right and fired a shot across his body for his second goal of the season.
“In the last few games, we were creating chances,” head coach Ryan Anatol said. “We were getting opportunities, we knew we just had to take some of them. I thought we finished some chances tonight but the positive was that we continued to create them.”
The Seawolves outshot the Revolutionaries 19 (10 on goal) to 12 (six on goal).
Goalkeeper Rushon Sandy registered his first clean sheet as a Stony Brook player. He made six saves in the process.
Conversely, Macauley and George Washington goalkeeper Duncan Wegner split time in net for the 90 minutes. In the first half, Macauley made one stop. After taking over at halftime, Wegner finished with six saves.
The Seawolves will get their first taste of Coastal Athletic Association play this weekend, as they hit the road to take on the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday. The Hawks have had a strong start to their season, going 2-0-1 thus far. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
