After starting its season unbeaten through three matches, the Stony Brook women’s soccer team’s run ended convincingly, as it was blanked.
In the first of two straight road games, the Seawolves (2-1-1) traveled to Philadelphia to face the La Salle Explorers (3-1-1). Stony Brook failed to muster up any offense in a 2-0 defeat.
Following a stagnant opening twenty minutes, the Explorers got on the board first in the 22nd minute. La Salle forward Justyce Hollenbach laid a ball to forward Haley Gschrey, who received it just outside the box. She evaded defender Sammy Hannwacker and buried a shot into the top left corner to give her team the advantage.
In the second half, the Seawolves’ defense fell victim to a similar play from Gschrey. In the 65th minute, La Salle midfielder Elizabeth Estrada played a short pass to Gschrey. She took a couple of touches towards the goal and smashed a shot into goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella’s near post to double the Explorers’ lead.
Gschrey’s brace was enough to lead her team to a comfortable victory, as Stony Brook failed to produce any goals of its own.
“It was an evenly matched game,” head coach Tobias Bischof said in a postgame interview with Stony Brook Athletics. “We weren’t clean enough in the final third but La Salle was. Their efficiency in front of the goal made the difference.”
Stony Brook outshot La Salle 17 (six shots on goal) to 11 (six shots on goal). However, 10 of its attempts came when it was already down 2-0.
Alongside Hollenbach and Estrada, La Salle forward Ricshya Walker also registered an assist.
Pasquarella saved four shots. La Salle goalkeeper Michela Auguadro kept her first clean sheet of 2024. She made five stops.
The Seawolves will look to get back on track when they take on the Yale Bulldogs on Thursday in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs are 2-1 on the year and are coming off a 2-0 victory against Oregon State. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
