A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the Aug. 23 fire, after turning himself in to the police.
According to Doug Little, Assistant Chief of Stony Brook Police Department, the fire, which destroyed one of the Chapin Apartments, was caused when the alleged teen set fire to a mattress which was against the building. Twenty-two people were moved due to the fire and transferred to the Schromburg, Chapin, and West Apartments. No one was injured.
The suspect, whose had no previous arrests, could not be identified by police because he is a minor. His mother was staying on campus at the time of the incident.
The teen was charged with fourth degree arson. If found guilty, the maximum sentence would be five years and the minimum would be no less than one year.
‘He is a minor, so the matter will be adjudicated through the family court system,’ says Detective Sergeant Edward Fitzgerald of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Arson Taskforce.’
