I apologize in advance, but due to an unfortunate turn of events, I will not be blogging everyday on the Film Festival. Sadly, without a car, I cannot drive to Staller. But I will make a conscious effort to get down there and catch as many screenings as possible.
I don’t have a car. Since I am carless, (not careless; CARless. I totaled my car earlier in the week. No big deal) I have found myself with a lot of free time.
Despite a diagnosis of Adult ADHD, it is very difficult to manage any free time I have to myself. Except when there’s a movie on.
I don’t know what it is about movies, but the sheer presence of a film poses therapeutic qualities to my mental condition. Recently ordering a subscription to HBO for the sole reason of watching season 8 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, I found myself watching a slew of new movies beyond my tastes. Latest in the lineup is “Down With Love,” a cheesy romantic comedy that failed to capture my full attention.
The movie was at least entertaining despite its cookie-cutter plot. Taking place in the 60s, writer Barbara Novak (Renée Zellweger) writes a novel and accomplishes her dream of making a name for herself despite her gender in an industry controlled by male dominance. She meets womanizer, imposture and writer Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor). The two ultimately fall in love. That’s really all it’s about.
What I did like about this movie was the icing that covered the cake. What I appreciated the most was its classiness: decor, apparel, music and location. Everything was classy. If you were impressed by the aesthetics of “American Psycho,” you’ll understand what I mean.
The most I can take away and offer to you from watching this film is that if you’re interested in romantic comedies and you haven’t seen this film, get your hands on it. But don’t rush. Just add it to your “novelty” list. It will hold as much weight as a trinket in your amusement-park-prizes collection.
I’m now watching “The Muse.” It just started, so stick around to find out what I think of it.
